I had the same problem, the password was sometimes not recognized. The problem may be related to a corrupted NVS memory.
After I deleted the memory
esptool.py --chip esp32 erase_region 0x9000 0x6000
the password was recognized again. To prevent WiFi related data from being stored in NVS memory ...
