Are you verifying the voltage at the ESP32 pin with a decent meter, or are you just using your power supply's display?

The "less memory hungry method" does not need to be necessarily wireless. I could connect the second board via UART/I2C. Does anyone have ideas, or even an example of such an approach? The schematic and photo you showed on your last replies are from your board that is working stable? No problems with initializing the PHY?

Ya, its been working solidly since I posted it. There are others now that sell ones like it though.
