Flash 25Q32C31G Sensitivity to Heat

Postby aaquilina » Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:11 am

Has anyone else encountered issues with destroying the flash chip after reflow or desoldering? I just got back a few prototypes for my own ESP32 board and none of them are able to program the flash (FlashID = 0xFFFFFFF, SizeID = 0xff). I suspect that the cause is too much heat on the module during reflow. I desoldered one of the prototype chips and soldered it on a devkit, and it gave the same error. I then soldered a new chip (same date code as the ones on my prototype) onto the devkit and it worked fine. When I desoldered a working devkit chip onto my prototype board, it gave the same flash error again. I'm now waiting on new esp32 modules to try them on my prototype board using hand soldering. I was wondering if anyone else encountered similar issues while prototyping.

I had this exact same situation yesterday, hand soldering the module worked fine though.
