IP address of access point

Hello,
I have a simple case where I want to connect to a tcp server running on the ESP32 configured as an AP. I can run the softAP example and connect from an external device. I can run the tcp_server and connect to my local wifi and then talk to the server. It's not clear to me how to connect to the tcp_server if the esp is in AP mode.
This seems simple but I can't figure out how to get the tcp_server to get an IP address that I can then connect to. What am I missing?
