Logging to Host in Real Time?

I apologize if this question has been answered already -- the forum search is timing out on me.

Are there any tools available for displaying logs in real time using the JTAG logging to host feature?

This light-weight logging through the tracing library seems like it could be quite useful, but the tools I'm reading about make it appear to be an after-the-fact thing since a trace file must be processed by logtrace_proc.py, and the actual logging needs to be activated by connecting to OpenOCD through telnet and issuing a command. That is all rather cumbersome for a feature that could lighten the on-board processing load of logging.
