ESP32 is finally real?

Postby WiFive » Mon May 16, 2016 1:40 pm

ESP32 dev kits starting to ship? Those of us from the beta group who did not get an ESP31b kit can expect one?

I can only tell you that's not an ESP32 but an ESP31; there's no ESP32 chip released yet.

Not "released" but I hope there are production samples if it is shipping in 5 weeks.

Launched in August.. so surely not delivered before october...
Still no official reference for the CAN support. I may switch on another MCU.

Good point. I just poked our hardware guys. The details (which I'll also post in the other topics) are like this: We do have one CAN interface. It does still needs an external PHY. Also, if I understand it correctly, the MAC layer has to be implemented at least partially in software, and at the moment we don't have that yet. My apologies for not answering this earlier.

A herd of chips in the wild! I can't tell if these are 31b or 32.

Meanwhile, some sad beta testers are still without a sample. Still sort of encouraging. Must not jump ship to another chipset. Be strong.

I'm pretty sure that those are still ESP31s, unless our silicon fab has given us their excruciating long (long from a PoV of someone who wants to get his hands on the chip, not from a PoV of what's reasonable) lead times just for shits and/or giggles.

Yes we often forget that there are lead times behind lead times behind...

Hope for some SDK updates soon to ease the wait.

For the ESP31? I don't know what every single one of my colleague is up to, but I wouldn't count on it. We're working on the ESP32 SDK now and due to the changes in memory map and CPU interaction, it's diverged so much from the ESP31 that I don't see a backport happening any time soon. (On the other side of the coin: I'm pretty sure most people are going to agree the new SDK is an improvement; we have some features in it at least I personally am really happy with; for example, dual-core multiprocessing is going to be almost embarrassingly easy if you already have an app that uses the FreeRTOS primitives correctly.)
