ESP32 or ESP8266 on a commercial product

Postby dev_000 » Mon Oct 16, 2017 7:07 pm

Hi all,

I am trying to prototype a device pushes data from the sensors to the cloud via WiFi. I am planning to make a prototype batch of 100-200 units for a client. Specification-wise both ESP32 and ESP8266 would fit the bill for my requirement. As this is in the prototype phase, I am planning to use one of those ESP32 or ESP8266 development boards as its not a very strict product requirement in terms of size/form factor.

What I wanted to know was that, is there any documented cases of failure or reliability issues for ESP32 or ESP8266 with continuous usage and elapsed time(Any sort of auto reset or something? OR is it designed to run continuously)? Anything I should be on the lookout for?

If both ICs are OK, I might prefer to go ahead with a ESP8266 development board as its cheaper and I dont have power usage limitations. Any thoughts on this decision(Should I be switching to ESP32)?

Thanks in advance,
Cheers.

PS: I know this is an ESP32 forum and this question pertains to both ESP8266 and ESP32. Sorry about that. I didnt know where else to ask.

There are a lot more esp8266 products in the field and sdk is more mature, but it lacks memory and features of esp32.
