Questions about SPIFFS

What happens when a file is not properly closed: say the device happens to crash or be repowered ?
Is some part of the file readable or is it all gone ?
Is it possible to check if a given file is still being written or if it is already closed ?
As one can guess I need these features for data logging and data recovery.
