ESP32 C3 cannot flash

Six devices have this problem.

Press and hold the reset button (pull up on EN)
Press and hold the boot pin (ground pin 9)
Release the reset button
Release the boot pin

I can confirm that the application is no longer running (board LEDs aren't flashing)

Espressif esptool gives the following error:

Code: Select all

A serial exception error occurred: Write timeout
Note: This error originates from pySerial. It is likely not a problem with esptool, but with the hardware connection or drivers.

Failed uploading: uploading error: exit status 1

The port is fully functional and, when the application is running, I can see data on the port.

Is there any way to factory reset the device or clear the running app from this state?
