Trouble Using Git Extension in VS Code with ESPIDF

I created a project using VS Code. Then I made the folder a Git repository. I created a branch, made changes and pushed them back. When I built the code, it still used the original code ignoring the changes.

I have to assume that the IDF isn't able to determine what code stream to use. Has anyone been able to actually use this method successfully?
