ESP32 S3 WROOM USB VBUS conection

Postby LearningStuff » Tue Nov 25, 2025 11:28 pm

Hi, I'm designing a custom board for ESP32 S3 WROOM module.

It will be powered from USB wall charger and separate USB cable connected to my PC USB port will be used for flashing and debugging codes only, which raised the question of what to do with VBUS pin on USB cable connected to PC USB port. ESP32 S3 WROOM has D+ and D- pins and no dedicated VBUS pin as far as I understood from the datasheet.

Can I leave the VBUS pin of the USB cable connected to PC floating or is there other recommended ways to deal with VBUS?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you don't have to connect VBUS at all.
Another common option is to connect both VBUS and put a diode between them. This way, the board can be powered by either USB or PSU without short-circuiting one to the other - provided the board doesn't need more power than PC USB can deliver.
