Thread commissioning over multi-hop: Will Joiner succeed if Commissioner is out of direct RF range?

Postby kunj_smart » Sat Jan 10, 2026 5:47 am

Hello,

I have a question regarding Thread commissioning behavior over multi-hop networks.

Assume the following physical layout:

- Thread Border Router (Commissioner) at position X
- A Thread Router connected to the Border Router at position X + 30 meters
- A new Thread Joiner device located at position X + 60 meters

So the Joiner is NOT in direct RF range of the Thread Border Router,
but it IS in RF range of an intermediate Thread Router.

My question is:

If I start commissioning from the Thread Border Router (Commissioner),
will the Joiner at X + 60 meters successfully commission through the intermediate Router?

In other words:
Does Thread commissioning traffic (Discovery Request, DTLS handshake, Joiner messages)
get forwarded over existing Routers automatically,
or must the Joiner be in direct RF range of the Commissioner to succeed?

I want to confirm whether multi-hop commissioning is supported by design in Thread,
or if commissioning only works when the Joiner can hear the Commissioner directly.

Any clarification or reference to documentation would be appreciated.

Thanks.
