1064 files (137 components) for "Hello world!" Why?

Postby NikolaiBaschinski » Wed Apr 29, 2026 10:33 am

Hello everyone,

I am new to ESP32, sorry if my question sounds odd.

I have a C6 Dev board and use Espressive IDE. My "Hello world!" project build compiles 1064 files (137 components). Why?

For comparasion the STM32 hello world has only 11 files. https://github.com/nikolai-baschinski/S ... bare_metal

Thanks
Nikolai

That is because of the way ESP-IDF is set up. If you don't declare which components your project needs and set up a minimum build, we compile everything and let the linker sort out what needs to be included and what doesn't. Generally, this is OK as when developing, you only compile most components once and the compiled objects will be re-used if you change your code and reflash.
