Using esp_mqtt_client_publish vs esp_mqtt_client_enqueue

I can use esp_mqtt_client_publish and have message straight away but I like the idea of the MQTT library queuing and dequeuing messages so it doesn't overload itself.

The API for esp_mqtt_client_enqueue states "Enqueue a message to the outbox, to be sent later"

I am finding they are dequeued 1 second later even when the system is idle.

Is there any way to configure the normal dequeue time?
