What is cost of running selfhosted ESP RainMaker on AWS for one device?

Postby WizzDev » Wed Jun 18, 2025 5:16 am

A lot of our clients ask for a self-hosted, full-control cloud solution to manage a small number of ESP32-based devices — typically 1 to 5 units — with a clean, turnkey setup.

I’m evaluating ESP RainMaker as a self-hosted option on AWS or similar. The use case is lightweight:
- Devices send temperature and battery status via MQTT
- One message every 5 minutes
- No OTA, just simple state sync and on/off control

Has anyone tried hosting RainMaker (or a similar stack) in the cloud for such a small-scale deployment? Curious about the minimum viable monthly cost — EC2, storage, traffic, etc.

Looking for ballpark estimates or tips to keep it minimal and reliable.

Since ESP RainMaker is based on AWS serverless architecture, the operating cost would be low for your use case, but there is a cost attached to the RainMaker license itself. For more info, you can drop an email to sales@espressif.com
