Is the ESP32-P4 Just a pipe dream

Postby mikemoy » Mon Dec 01, 2025 6:39 am

The ESP32-P4 was announced quite a while ago. I've noticed that when people in the forum ask about it Espressif is for the most part silent. I also see that even in IDF v5.5.1 the max CPU speed is still capped at 360MHZ, and not the 400 MHZ as advertised.

Can we get a clear once and for all answer to its status please? Did some new sales guy oversell it, and now your backtracking ?
Its a great part and people want it.

I am just wondering why people like Waveshare are making great modules like this and your not.

ECO troubles. Basically, the current silicon isn't capable of running at 360MHz in the operating ranges we specify for them. An ECO that fixes that is in the pipeline; after that I expect the part to get more devboards. Because of the complexity of that ECO, it's taken us a while, though.

Interesting! Thanks for the insight.

Also what is ECO? I can’t find a definition - external crystal oscillator?

It originally stands for Engineering Change Order, I believe, but it kinda evolved to mean a new revision (with either small or large changes) of the silicon.

I am glad you decided to release the P4 even in this state. It might not have fully meet your requirements but it works well enough to finally get one of our projects done and two others on their way.

Of course getting an improved version in the future is still higly apriciated.
