Which module is more reliable for sensor-based IoT projects — Wemos D1 Mini or ESP-01?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been experimenting with both the Wemos D1 Mini and the ESP-01 for a small IoT sensor project (monitoring temperature and humidity using DHT11).
Both modules use the same ESP8266 chip, but I’ve noticed some real-world differences when running them continuously for 24–48 hours:

Wemos D1 Mini: more stable serial output, easier firmware flashing, slightly higher idle current.

ESP-01: compact and efficient, but limited GPIO and needs extra wiring for flashing and power regulation.

I’m trying to decide which one to recommend for small-scale production, especially where long-term reliability and Wi-Fi stability matter most.
So I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • Has anyone done extended runtime tests on both modules (say, > 1 week)?
  • Are there noticeable differences in Wi-Fi reconnect times or watchdog resets?
  • For low-power operation, which setup performs better in deep sleep + wake-up cycles?

Here’s my current setup using this Wemos D1 Mini board and a regulated 3.3 V supply.

Would appreciate your feedback or any measurement results from your own projects!

Thanks,
Rifat

I think you should go with Wemos D1 Mini, more reliable, flexible in pinout. You have shared seperate product modules, instead of that you should go for a single pcb package, something like this: https://www.pcbway.com/project/sharepro ... c62cd.html

All your sensors and modules are chipped on a single circuit board, will make the design compact.
