ESP32 with TMC2208 and Encoder Wiring Confirmation

Postby Sliferslacker » Sun Jul 26, 2026 3:42 pm

Hello so I know how to connect TMC2208 + encoder to arduino, but the ESP32 is 3.3 volt microcontroller so I just wanted to double check wiring to avoid frying my ESP32. For arduino this is the wiring diagram I used for TMC2208.

I'm planning to follow the same diagram for connecting ESP32 with TMC and I'm assuming that the difference is that I connect the VIO on TMC to 3.3 volt pin of ESP32, that would make the STEP,DIR,MS1,MS2 pins all 3.3 volt and safe to attach to any GPIO on ESP32?

With the 2 phase encoder below. I think how I would wire it is red to esp32 5 volt, black to gnd, and the encoder datasheets says it's NPN open collector so apparently I need to use a pullup resistor on A and B wires to make them operate on 3.3 volt. I have my proposed wiring diagram below, I tried to label where the wires were heading to the esp32
