What bothers you the most when looking for ESP32 resources?

Postby ESPBoards » Sat Nov 23, 2024 4:23 pm

I hate the there are tons of different ESP32 based boards, sometimes unnamed ones, etc., sometimes the pins are mapped weirdly and undocumented...

But i guess that's what you get when the microcontroller is so cheap. And you cheap out on the Chinese clones of boards...

What is your biggest frustration when working with ESP32?

Waiting for the P4 to be fully released :D

Sounds like you have been bombarded with cheap clones. Stick with the main stream ones.
Can't go wrong with the ones from Espressif, from reputable sources like Digi-key or mouser.
My go to module for most things I make is the M5Stamp ESP32S3 Module

I like this one because I can solder it directly to my PCB.

They also have another with pins soldered on.

And yet another if your want even more I/O pins.

I usually try to stick with espressif built boards. Have not had a problem yet.

Purely documentation: Espressif's tendency to give examples (which only cover a small part of all possibilities) instead of real documentation, explaining the mechanism and tables with data. This have become a lot better since ESP8266, but I think there can still be improvement. For example regarding the NimbLE stack, documentation is next to nothing, only examples that only cover a small part of what's possible. None of the Kconfig options have proper documentation. I have no clue what happens when I change them.
