esp32c5 RTT/FTM failing for small burst sizes with Android devices

Postby sawtape » Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:40 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to use an esp32c5 for FTM / WiFi RTT. I have it configured on 5ghz, 40mhz bandwidth.

When ranging from an Android device with the default burst size of 8, I find that I never see more than 5 / 8 range attempts in a burst be successful. I don't think I've ever seen more than 1 / 4 be successful, and I don't think I've ever seen successes below 4 attempts. However, if I go higher (say, 16, or 30 attempts per burst), I find that the vast majority of them are successful!

Is there a reason the majority of attempts fail at low burst sizes, and the vast majority succeed at high burst sizes?

I find that this holds true regardless of distance between the esp32 and the Android device. I have RSSIs in the teens when conducting these tests.

Thanks to anyone who can offer help!
