SoftAP + Mesh

Is it possible to run a mesh network without a router and have each node as access point so that a phone could connect to them?

Combining softAP and mesh examples resulted in mesh running normally and an access point occasionally appearing with some number as SSID (not the one defined in my application) and I was not able to authentificate and connect to it.

Found a topic claiming it is impossible to achieve such behaviour, but MDF has been released since, so it may have changed by now:
