esp32-c6 linux eclipse esp-adf development environment does not work

Postby esp32.damiano » Sat Sep 13, 2025 6:35 am

what is the proper way to install the following development environment

CPU is a esp32c6 NOT an extensa or other arm derivatives ! (it is YOUR CPU)

ESP-ADF since I am using a ES8388 with a custom board

ESP-IDF 5.5.1 (not the one inside ESP-ADF, that is really old and as far as I understand has no clang support at all)

codeblocks IDE (tried eclipse in all the permutations and the latest CDT is even worse the the old one)
codeblocks has a clang plugin.... hopefully it will work

the issue is being able to install a clang into tools, apparently, when I select the esp32c6 to install in esp-idf/install.sh the clang part is NOT installed.... and .... WOW the amount of code that there is, just to "tar -xzf some-archive" is .... amazing, I suppose some AI wrote it

while waiting for a solution....

may I suggest that you AVOID using the latest shiny "feature", that does exactly the same thing as the previous one, in a DIFFERENT way.
what you are doing is reinventing the wheel as an hexagon .... yes, it will not roll down the hill.... we get that

further info

reinstalled eclipse CDT, updated to latest 2025-9, then, I have the following in .profile

Code: Select all

esp-env ()
   {
echo "esp-env just defines the basic IDF PATH vars"
   export WIRADIO_PATH=/home/damiano/work/IPPml-ws/wiradio
   export IDF_TOOLS_PATH=${WIRADIO_PATH}/esp-tools
   export IDF_PATH=${WIRADIO_PATH}/esp-idf
   export ADF_PATH=${WIRADIO_PATH}/esp-adf
   }
so, before starting eclipse I esp-env to set the vars, tested they survive to a new shell
NOTE a recent IDF is needed since the one in ADF is buggy, for eclipse dev purposes

what happens is that eclipse plugin does NOT obey to the env vars and just goes around messing
See the screenshot

can confirm that the eclipse plugin is broken on the above configuration

it keep installing into .espressif even if the shell variable IDF_TOOLS_PATH say otherwise

I can successfully idf.py build , from shell

when I try to debug from eclipse, the WHOLE project is rebuilt .....

beside being half as fast as the bash compilation, it is totally against the normal makefile rules

something that was working up until five years ago

the whole clang-llvm logic is a total mess, basically another layer of wrappers over compilation

slow and unreliable + good luck finding where the problem is

so, after the whole process of compile, debug start from eclipse this is the result

NOTE the useful error

Java used to give some meaningful traces, not anymore

wonderful, the eclipse plugin has screwed even the working environment

this is what I get when I try to clean up the project
NOTE that it used to work, before attempting to use the eclipse plugin

Code: Select all

$ esp-dev
esp-dev is used when you wish to use the shell to compile
esp-env just defines the basic IDF PATH vars
ADF_PATH: /home/damiano/work/IPPml-ws/wiradio/esp-adf
IDF_PATH: /home/damiano/work/IPPml-ws/wiradio/esp-idf

Tried the new ESP-IDF plugin beta for Eclipse, cannot set where the tools directory is, simply there is no choice
https://dl.espressif.com/dl/idf-eclipse ... ates/beta/

Can anybody send a message to developers "removing features do NOT make people satisfied"

so, went back to trying to get Eclipse CDT 2025-09 to work with the latest official ESP-IDF plugin
https://dl.espressif.com/dl/idf-eclipse ... tes/latest

One of the BIG issues is that it appears that tools are part of IDF, but they are not really, they have a life of their own

Since tools are on their own, make it clear, allow users to install them like ESP-TOOLS, a simple bash script, you could even use python, please STANDARD python, not a hacked version.

anyway, I have it mostly working, this is the latest error message

Code: Select all

        ... 7 more
NOTE that the code can be compiled and run on the CPU, I do it using idf.py
what does NOT work is the IDE and the debugger

I cannot open a bug into github for IDF plugin since their idiotic double verification had shut me out

It is quite easy to gave GOOD review on github, just shut people out.....

I am really tired
